CHICAGO --- September 12 --- The following is a statement by Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America:
"Hurricane Ike is fast approaching the Texas Gulf coast and will likely be catastrophic. Feeding America and its member food banks have pre-staged thousands of pounds of food, water and emergency supplies for disaster relief that will be quickly moved to affected areas. Feeding America has dispatched a team of trained disaster relief workers to Houston to help coordinate response efforts with Feeding America's 16 Texas food bank members, the Texas Food Bank network, and other relief organizations. Feeding America continues to provide emergency food to thousands of residents of Louisiana still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Gustav last week. Significant funds are still needed to continue our work there. Our thoughts are with the people of the Texas Gulf coast as the hurricane approaches.
